PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF BISPHOSPHONATE-INDUCED OSTEONECROSIS

Presented by Robert E. Marx, DDS

Friday, September 7, 2007
Quintessence Publishing Office
Hanover Park, Illinois

Patients taking oral bisphosphonates face a risk of developing nonhealing exposed bone (bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis) following an invasive oral surgical procedure; these patients then present a challenge to the practitioner managing such osteonecrosis once it develops. This seminar describes a simple blood test that can be used to assess the risk of patients on oral bisphosphonate therapy for developing osteonecrosis before they undergo any elective oral surgical procedure. Specific protocols for managing patients with exposed bone and recommendations for preventive measures also will be presented.
COURSE OUTLINE
1. The mechanism of bisphosphonates and their effects on bone
2. Why the jaws?
3. Recognition, prevention, and treatment of intravenous bisphosphonate–induced osteonecrosis
4. Oral bisphosphonates and osteoporosis
5. CTX testing for oral bisphosphonate–induced bone suppression
6. Prevention and treatment of oral bisphosphonate–induced osteonecrosis

COURSE OBJECTIVES
•To gain an understanding of the toxic effects of bisphosphonates on bone
•To relate proper history taking and examination techniques for the recognition of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis
•To appreciate the difference between intravenous bisphosphonate–induced osteonecrosis and oral bisphosphonate–induced osteonecrosis
•To learn the value of CTX testing related to oral bisphosphonate–induced osteonecrosis
•To learn the prevention and treatment protocols for all bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis cases
